David was a warrior and this was a warrior psalm. We all have our own battles. How we handle them will determine our lives. David’s conclusion is a powerful reminder of who is fight our battles and what we need to do: 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Sheep are very helpless, they can eat themselves to death if not watched and if you put them on their backs they can die as they can't right themselves. Isaiah 53:6 says, "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-everyone- to his own way." We, like sheep, would be forever lost and would easily die without a Shepherd. Is God your Shepherd? | Yes. Multiple times throughout my life already God has already saved me from so much. He is my shepherd in every way that a shepherd can be. Add Comment |
This is the Psalm for today and it starts out with The LORD, that's why we reviewed what it means. It's important to realize who is the Shepherd. If the Lord is the Shepherd, what are we? | We are his sheep. He takes care of us just like the shepherd who left the 99 sheep for the one. Add Comment |

Hebrews 12:6 tells us God disciplines those He loves. David found comfort in God's discipline because it showed him God loved him. It is a way to know and experience God's presence. How can you see God's discipline as bringing comfort? | God's discipline can take things out of our lives that at the time might be the most important thing for us and we think we need, but in the end it would only hurt us, and the fact that he shows this much care for us is a comfort. There are two references to Jesus in the Psalm 8 passage. The first in Daniel 7:13-14. The second in Hebrews 2:5-15. If the last part of verse 4 (the son of man) and following to the end of verse 7 is about Jesus, how would this lead to a greater understand of why we should say: “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth?” | Well in verse 7 it says "You made him lower than the angels for a short time" but that time is over, he died, and he rose, he is worthy of all praise, and his name is majestic. Next, “You have established strength because of your foes.” Also, notice what David writes next “…to still the enemy, and the avenger.” Notice that foes are plural and enemy and avenger are singular. Who are the foes and who is this enemy and avenger? | I think the foes could possibly be people who do not honor God, or also the Pharisees mentioned in Mathew 21, but because enemy and avenger are singular, I think this is referring to satan, who wants revenge that will never come on God. Add Comment |
“You have set your glory above the heavens?” Some translate that a bit like this: “You have set your glory in the heavens above.” Others think this means that God is greater and beyond the heavens (universe and everything in it). What do you think and why? | I think, based on those translations, the one that makes the most sense to me is "You have set your glory in the heavens above." Because other parts of the bible tell us that God's dwelling place is in heaven, not above it. Add Comment |
How does this relate to Jesus’ confrontation with the chief priests and the scribes mentioned in Matthew 21? | They too will be silenced just like it says in Psalm 8 Add Comment |
Now some Interpretation questions. “Oh LORD our Lord.” These are not the same words. The LORD in all caps is YHWH (Yahweh) it is the Eternal Creator LORD of the Universe. Lord is Adonai which means ruler in the sense of king or governor. Why does David refer to the Eternal God of the Universe as, “our Lord” or our king? | I am not quite sure I understand, maybe it is my translation, I am reading CSB. Nowhere in Psalm 8 does David refer to the Eternal God of the Universe as our king. Add Comment |

Let's Observe. Verse 2 is quoted by Jesus in the New Testament. Read Matthew 21:15-17. Jesus does not quote the verse word for word, he paraphrases it. I think this also goes to show that God is sovereign over all things, that even before they can speak, they will praise God, and God knows it, plans it, and sets them apart. Add Comment |
What is the result of their praising in verse 2 of Psalm 8? | The result will be silencing the enemy and the avenger. Add Comment |
Do you think He silenced them? | I think when he awoke on the third day and walked out of the tomb, yes, he silenced them. Add Comment |
Please note that most scholars think that David was young when he wrote this song. David spent many nights out under the stars. He spent many a night thinking about God. So since you have studied psalm 19 what have you been thinking about God and Jesus? | I think it must have been hard for Jesus, even though he was the Son of God, he still knew that he was going to one day die, even if he knew he was going to be raised from the dead. He was human, and that human fear must have been in him concerning his death. Add Comment |
What is the result of the children praising Jesus in the temple as explained in the Matthew passage in verse 15? | It made the Pharisees indignant towards Jesus that he was letting the children say these things about him. Add Comment |
When you look up at the stars in the sky what do you think about? | I think about the vastness of the universe, and even though God made millions upon millions of stars and knows them by name, he still loves each and every one of us, I think its cool because God spent 7 days creating creation, but spends 9 months creating you. Why do you think David begins the Psalm with what can be known about God in creation and then spend the rest of the Psalm talking about how wonderful God’s Word is? | Well I think he starts with God Add Comment |
First notice the structure by following the action. One thing you should notice is that the verse breaks in the wrong place. Please note that chapter breaks and verse breaks were done by Robert Stephanus in the 16th century and he had no idea what he was doing and unfortunately they stuck. Verse 5 should begin with “In them he has set…”. If you look closely, you will notice that a person can sing the first line of the song and then the choir responds. This is repeated with both the leader and choir singing the last line together: “whose voice is not heard.” There is a middle part where the leader sings and the choir responds. Then there the final part which is a repeat of the first – leader, response, leader, response, both: “and there sin nothing hidden from its heat.” From this structure you can make out the meaning or point of this song. So what is the point of this song? | I think the point is to talk about Gods glory and how you can clearly see it through what he has made. Add Comment |

Verse 4 is a bit odd. That seems strange. Read Ephesians 4:17-27. The word for anger here is not “be mad” but rather be in awe of God. A better word is fear, or revere. Often when we stew over something we leave God out of it. How would fearing God (trusting, turn it over to God) prevent us from sinning when we are angry at someone and it is keeping us awake? | We should not fear Hod in that we are so afraid of him we dont want to follow him but we should be afraid in the way that he is the all mighty God of the universe and is sovereign over all things Add Comment |

Multiple times throughout the passage it uses words like "predestined", "the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will.", "For he chose us in him, before the foundations of the world." So when it uses the word adoption I think that literally means that God chose us. Add Comment |
