Note: This is a song to be sung. David wrote it for the choir master to be sung in the temple in Jerusalem. However, when David wrote this Psalm he wasn’t in Jerusalem where the King should be, instead, he was on the run for his life. Note “Selah” is musical term that might mean pause.

Has anyone or anything kept you awake at night while you thought about it over and over? Think carefully about this. It is a common experience. Sometime we are mad at a brother or sister who did something that was not fair. Sometimes we are mad at our parents. Sometimes someone said something about us that just was not true. We think about it over and over and we cannot sleep. This is called stewing or worrying over something. When we stew over something it can make it hard to sleep. Why do you think we do this? We want to fix it

Those who don’t want to obey God are like: straw. Straw is not strong, it does not last, and it is quickly gone. At the time this was written people would winnow (separate the straw from the grain) grain. The men would cut wheat by hand and they would stack it in piles. They would let those piles dry out a bit. Women would come with big flat baskets. They would put some of the grain mixed with straw in the basket and swirl it around. Then they would throw it into the air. The grain was heavier than the dry straw so it would fall back into the basket, but the wind would blow the dry straw away. So which do you want to be like the straw or the tree and why?The tree because I want to have everything I need!
